  • Starting solids just got easy with Baby Gains

Baby Gains is Darwin’s only baby food provider. We make starting solids so easy. You simply order what you’d like from our online store, we cook it, blast freeze it and deliver it direct to your door!

Baby Gains does not add or use any salt, sugar, preservatives, fillers, or nasties to their foods, we aim to provide wholesome beginnings for life-long gains.

  • Why is Baby Gains better than supermarket shelf food?

Baby Gains foods are made in a kitchen, not a factory. They’re cooked with fresh ingredients and then frozen in a blast chiller in order to retain essential nutrients. Shelf stable baby food is not as good as our product because it has been heat treated in order to maintain a shelf-stable state. This means the food has been cooked at really high temperatures which can damage nutrients in foods.

Baby Gains is frozen in food trays and then given directly to you, meaning it hasn’t gone through multiple food processes and the food is as close to home-made as a parent can get. Shelf stable baby-food pouches need to be a thin consistency in order to squeeze nicely out of the pouch. Often in order to achieve this thin consistency, pouch puree’s are watered down, this makes the product cheaper. In addition to this, being on thin puree’s or runny style purees can delay important oral development in your child. When we compare pouch foods to Baby Gains foods, our meals have a thicker texture dependent on the type of meal which is an essential part of texture progression for oral development in children.

  • When should I start solids?

  • What foods should I start with first?

Heard that foods before one, are for fun? Well, not exactly! While it is a very fun stage of parenthood, around 6 months old, your baby’s needs for a variety of micro and macronutrients increases! This means that providing breast milk or infant formula on its own, is no longer enough to meet your baby’s needs from 6 months on. By providing your baby a variety of different foods that are of high nutritional quality, you can meet the key nutrients your baby requires. These nutrients include:

    • Iron
    • Zinc
    • Healthy fats (like your Omegas)
    • Vitamin D
    • Calcium
    • Choline

Baby Gains, Easy Iron provides you with smooth iron rich foods that you can introduce to your baby when first starting solids. A perk of Easy Iron is that these foods naturally contain zinc too! If you combine these foods with fruits or other vegetables from our other smooth products, you can create your own nourishing blend for your baby. Pairing the foods from Easy Iron with our vegetables or fruits from our Pumping Greens, Bright Delight or Fruitylicious products can help aid in the absorption of iron too. This is because pairing iron rich foods with foods high in vitamin C can help boost the absorption of iron!

  • How often should my baby eat?

When you’re first starting with solids, your baby may not eat very much. It is just as important for your baby to learn to eat too. During the first month, you might find you only offer your baby a few spoons of food, once per day. Around 8 months or once your baby has developed the ability to eat, this may increase to two meals a day and so forth. Up until 12 months of age, infant formula and/or breastmilk is still their main source of nutrition and are recommended to be offered before meals. You might like to offer your baby solids an hour after their usual milk feed. Remember, every baby is unique and have varying appetites day to day.

  • My baby doesn't eat as much as other babies I know, help!

Every baby is different and has different needs. Your baby may eat more today and less tomorrow. This is because just like adults, baby’s have their own appetite which regulates. Try not to force your baby to eat and where possible, create a calm environment for your baby at meal times. You will know if your baby has had enough or if meal time is over if:

    • Baby is turning head away from spoon or food
    • Throwing food on the floor
    • Trying to get out of their chair
    • Showing disinterest
  • What about allergies and how do I introduce them?

Allergenic foods (foods that people often have allergies to) include:

    • Egg
    • Fish
    • Peanuts
    • Cow’s milk
    • Soy
    • Tree Nuts
    • Wheat
    • Shellfish
    • Sesame

It is recommended that you offer these foods to your baby when starting solids to help reduce their risk of developing allergies to these foods. • Are there any foods I shouldn't introduce to my baby?

    Yes actually!

    • Honey as it could contain a bacterial (Clostridium) that can cause infant botulism
    • Fruit juice or other sugar-sweetened beverages (including sugar free sodas)
    • Foods that are hard such as raw chunks of vegetables, nuts and seeds or any other food that could pose as a choking risk to your baby
    • Cow’s milk or milk alternatives should not be given to baby’s under 12months as a whole milk drink replacement, milk used in recipes or foods such as cheese and yoghurt
